Tanya Handley

Since moving to the Yukon in 1992, Tanya Handley has embraced the northern lifestyle. Between dog walks and various outdoor pursuits, she works as an illustrator & graphic designer in Whitehorse. The flexibility of self-employed life has allowed her to discover the many joys of renovations and odd construction jobs as well as giving her the opportunity to create many pieces of art for art’s sake.
She enjoys fine art silk-screen printmaking as it is a non-toxic and versatile medium that she can do right in her basement. Silkscreen printing is a method for creating a set of original art pieces. Instead of selling one piece of art at a given price, it allows an artist to sell the same idea many times at a much lower price. Yet because of the process and the way each print is produced individually, a silk-screened print is considered an “original piece of art” just as an etching would be. A design is thought of and then broken into it’s various colour components. A screen is made of the image of each colour separately and is hand-printed one at a time on all the pieces of paper. The prints are left to dry and then the process is repeated with the next colour—and the next; and the next!—until the picture is complete. A limited edition of original works is formed of the ones that survive the process.
