Shiela Alexandrovich
Shiela was born and raised in the Yukon, with lots of time “ in the Bush”, as we say here. She is part of small land cooperative situated on the banks of the pristine Wheaton River, in the Coastal Mountains, 40 miles from Whitehorse, Yukon. She lives close to the land and is governed by the seasons. The yearly rounds include gardens and small livestock, firewood, willow baskets and sculpture, hand crafted furniture, beadwork and time to breathe deep.
As an individual, she is a full time artist and has taught throughout the Pacific Northwest. She has raised two children, home-schooled, and homesteaded on the banks of the Wheaton River for more than 20 years. Sheila is dedicated to the art, the joy and the work of alternative living.
As a northern artist, her exhibits have been in the north. Since 1992, she has had solo and group showings in the Whitehorse and Juneau (Alaska). She was a sponsored artist to the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, NWT, from 1994 to 2001, and was honored with Best Traditional Artist Award four times. From 1992 to 2002, she has exhibited at the juried ”Public Market”, in Juneau, Alaska. She produced “ Excitable Beads”, an exhibit of contemporary beadwork from Yukon and Alaska, 1999, which toured Whitehorse and Juneau. She is currently coordinator of the Wildwood Festival, a new Arts and Music festival in Mount Lorne, Yukon. She is one of the founding members of the Studio Gallery Assoc. in Whitehorse. Her work has been sold worldwide, with work in the McMichael Gallery, Yukon Permanent Collection, and Canada Council Art Bank.
