Jackie Ziehe
A combination of training, travel and the study of other artists’ works have contributed to the formation of Jackie’s painting style. Primarily a colorist, she has developed her ability to portray the effects of light on the landscapes through various use of hue and value.
Born in England, raised in Prince Rupert, and schooled in Vancouver, B.C., Jackie was always interested in drawing and painting. While pursuing an Education degree at the University of British Columbia, in the 1960’s she studied the visual arts under fine arts minor. A decade later, at the University of Alberta, Jackie continued her studies in the visual arts. Trained as a teacher, Jackie has taught both elementary and junior high school art classes. In the 1980’s Jackie enjoyed tutoring young students in drawing and painting, both individually and in organized workshops. Now, as an artist, Jackie prefers to spend her time in her studio studying and painting towards her personal growth. In order to continue to develop her talents, Jackie participates in many visual art workshops as well as other events such as public art exhibitions and competitions. Jackie is an active member in the art community in Whitehorse, assisting in many Friends of the Gallery activities.
Throughout her life she has experimented with many media including pencil, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, and oils. Her painting preference is oils and watercolors, but she often sketches in pencil, pencil crayon or pen - actually anything on hand will do if it’s necessary to capture the moment. The process of painting varies according to the situation. Jackie likes to go out in the bush or land and when something strikes her she attempts to instantly record the area through photography, value sketching or a quick color wash with watercolors.
Committed to exploring the possibilities of portraying light and its relationship to color, Jackie states that she is continually changing and growing as an artist. To this end, she plans on investigating further subjects to paint both in and outside of the Yukon.
